Most of the durability is built in at the factory. Professional latex is produced with tightly controlled wall thickness, so there are no thin spots that fail early, and pigments are formulated to resist fading and oxidation rather than turning grey after a few hours. Foil balloons are heat-welded along the seams and fitted with a self-sealing valve that closes automatically after filling, which is why they hold gas for days instead of hours.
The rest is technique applied when the set is made. HiFloat is a water-soluble polymer gel swirled inside a latex balloon before inflation; it dries into a thin film across the inner wall and typically multiplies float time several times over. Double-stuffing, where one latex balloon is inflated inside another, thickens the wall and deepens the colour at the same time.
For anything that has to stand for a long period, the most effective technology is not to use helium at all. Garlands and arches built from air-filled latex on rods, grids and frames hold their shape for weeks, because the balloons are not under constant stretch and nothing is escaping.
